OSUG - October 11 - Meeting Notes

posted 2006.10.18 Wednesday

Dear Sybase User;

The Ottawa Sybase User Group (OSUG) met on Wednesday, October 11, 2006.  We had over 40 registrants that activity participated in the day’s events. Various other friends and business associates of Sybase also dropped by for a look at the new Ottawa Sybase Canada office during the afternoon “open house”. For those who registered, we will be sending you an e-mail with the link to download the morning sessions presentations in PowerPoint format.

          The meeting started out with the introduction of guests and was then immediately followed by Mike Harrold, President of ISUG who addressed the attendees with an overview of ISUG’s support mechanisms for the Sybase IT professional. Mike also fielded questions through-out the day and attended the afternoon PB 11.net technical break out session. You can find out more about ISUG at http://www.ISUG.com.

          The first presentation was on the new PowerBuilder 11.net release coming to production soon. This was done by Sybase’s product evangelist, Mr. John Strano. John started out his presentation by taking the OSUG members on a futuristic journey into MS-Windows Vista and .Net 3.0 by showing a new DataWindow prototype using the WPF (Windows Presentation Format) feature! This is a great example of how Sybase is working hard behind the scenes with its refactoring effort to make sure that PowerBuilder developers have a clear path into the future.

          While John slowly rebooted his PC (thanks to VMware), Chris Pollach demonstrated the changes that he is working on to his STD (Software Tool & Die) Foundation Classes. These changes are targeted for incorporation into PowerBuilder 10.x, 10.5.x and 11.x and are targeted towards the Graphic User Interface as follows:

Afterwards, John continued on a high-level presentation of the new PowerBuilder 11.Net features. John did cover the these features in detail in the afternoon break-out session. In the morning though he focused on the basics of WinForm, WebForm and Smart Client fundamentals along with some of the newest features in Beta 2. What was nice to see in Beta 2 was the new web service DataWindow, deploying a PB component as an IIs web service, consuming a web service using the .Net support, consuming a .Net based web service, and publishing a PB component as a .Net assembly! These features really showed off the interoperability that PB 11 will have not only with the .Net framework – but also with other Visual Studio application components that you may be required to interface with.

The mornings high-lights for most people were:

The second presenter was Mr. Dave Shiposh of iAnyWhere Solutions who gave us a detailed review of the new SQL Anywhere release 10 DBMS engine. This newest release is “jam packed” with over 200 new features and performance improvements that will rival this DBMS engine with the big guys like Oracle, DB/2, SS2005 – but at a fraction of the price. What caught my eye were features like: Table Encryption, Column Compression, Reduced Locking overhead, Parallel Queries, Improved BLOB Indexing, Failover / Mirroring, .Net 2.0 Support, Performance and Application Analysis tools , Web Services, etc.

      Afternoon sessions included demonstrations of the new VisualExpert and VisualGuard products from Novalys Canada representative Marthe Grolleau and Quest Central for ASE 15 by Quest Software Ottawa representative Darren Mallette. These products go along way to help locate and maintain structural, design and performance issues within your PowerBuilder application and Database server. John Strano and Chris Pollach held a PB 11.net in-depth session and Chris also demonstrated a system built using ASP.Net and the Web DataWindow with EAServer using the STD Framework.

      The new Ottawa Sybase Canada offices were open for Sybase customers to drop-in and meet the staff. On hand for this event was Sybase Canada’s new General Manager – Tony Anotonello along with Sybase Vice President Brian Vink and PowerBuilder Product Manager Sue Dunnell.

Tentative upcoming events:
